INZ Shortens Residence Path

INZ Shortens Experience Requirement for Residence Path!

INZ has adjusted how experience is assessed — it’s not a rule change, but a shift in how the existing rules are interpreted.

Previously, the rules stated that applicants must have 3 years of experience working on a commercial company in a relevant role. Early direction from INZ stated:

  • 3 years total farm experience, plus
  • 2 years working in the exact Green List role and meeting the specific role qualifications and skilled wage rate.

This interpretation created confusion — and, for many AEWV holders who were granted visas when experience requirements were far looser, meant being unfairly shut out of the residence pathway — something we’ve raised with INZ and government through direct advocacy and formal petitions.

The good news? INZ has now clarified its approach.

Applicants with at least 12 months of verifiable, relevant experience can now move forward to the final stage of the Residence Visa pathway.  This requires:

  • holding a role with a Green List job title
  • earning at or above the Skilled Wage Rate, which changed for several occupations on 18 August 2025

Still Confused? You’re Not Alone.

This pathway is complex and highly dependent on your individual circumstances.
