Is Your Overseas Qualification a Key to Unlock Opportunities to a Life in New Zealand?
Overseas qualifications open up pathways to New Zealand and are often essential to securing your visa. They allow you to work in your chosen field and can not only help put you on pathway to residence but often hasten the trip.
But, to do so, your qualifications need to be formally recognised by Immigration New Zealand (INZ) or relevant professional bodies. This requires an International Qualification Assessment (IQA) from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).

What does an IQA do?
An IQA is an official evaluation conducted by NZQA which measures your overseas qualification against the
New Zealand Qualifications and Credentials Framework (NZQCF) to determine its comparable level and learning outcomes in New Zealand.
Example: Is your Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering the equivalent level as the same or similar in New Zealand? Will the studies within the degree’s courses support your suitability for a job as a Motor Mechanic?
Why would you need an IQA?
- Claiming essential points for qualifications under Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) or visas that require your qualification recognised.
- Demonstrating that your qualifications meet specific requirements on occupational skill shortage lists – for Green List roles.
- Assisting in proving you’re suitably qualified for a role.
- Meeting mandatory professional registration standards for fields like Teaching or Healthcare.
- Helping New Zealand employers and universities understand the equivalent value of your degree.
